KAZAKH-GERMAN COOPERATION ISSUES DISCUSSED AT THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF KAZAKHSTAN
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Beibut Atamkulov received Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Kazakhstan — Tilo Klinner in Nur-Sultan on the 9th of August, 2019.
Plans to organize bilateral visits and events at high and top levels, including the forthcoming visit of the head of the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan to Berlin this month, were considered.
The parties discussed topical issues of strengthening investment cooperation, noting the important role of the intergovernmental working group on trade and economic cooperation, the Kazakh-German Business Council for strategic cooperation and the Berlin Eurasian Club in this process, and the creation of the most favorable conditions for the work of German investors in Kazakhstan, including representatives of small and medium-sized businesses.
Special attention during the conversation was devoted to cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, the expansion of German language study in the secondary education system and through the network of centers for the study of the German language, as well as further development of cooperation in the field of dual education. It was noted the great importance of having a «living bridge» between the two countries in the face of the German Diaspora in Kazakhstan, numbering about 200,000 people, and about 900,000 «Kazakh» Germans in Germany.
Germany is one of the largest trading partners and investors of Kazakhstan. At the end of 2018, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Germany amounted to 2.1 billion US dollars, which is 10.8% higher than in 2017. Over the past 13 years, the inflow of direct investment from Germany to Kazakhstan amounted to more than 8.6 billion US dollars. About 90% of German investments in Kazakhstan go to the «non-resource sector», including the support and development of SMEs.
More than 900 enterprises with the participation of German capital operate in Kazakhstan. Among them were representatives of such major companies as «METRO», «KNAUF», «Heidelberg Cement», «BASF», «Linde AG», «CLAAS» and others. Last year, the opening of the Wilo production complex, which includes a high-tech center for the production, testing, and training of designers and engineers in the field of the cantilever, block and well-pumping systems, as well as the center of construction materials and equipment of the «OBI» company, took place.
